Hassan is a district in Karnataka state, India. Known for its natural beauty, this district is home to Hoysala style architecture and sculpture in Belur and Halebidi. Shravanabelagola is one of the most famous pilgrimages of the Jains in the Channarayapatna taluk, which is surrounded by Jain monuments.
The district is named Hassan after the Goddess “Haasanamba”, the goddess and presiding deity of the town. In Kannada language, Hassanamba means, ‘Smiling Mother’. Hassan was known as Sihmasanapuri and later it got the name of Hassan.
The Hassan district was ruled by the Mauryan rule in the 3rd century BC and subsequently ruled by Kadambas, Chalukyas, Gangas, Hoysalas and Vijayanagara Empire. The Hoysalas have brought the district a unique reputation through the unique style of architecture of the shrines.
